International Climber's Festival Comes to Town

By Matt Leslie on Jul 17, 2012

Every July, hundreds of climbers flock to the Lander area for a long weekend of great climbing and fun events. The 19th annual International Climber’s Festival brought a motley horde of crate-stackers, slack-liners, and generally psyched folks to town this weekend. As part of a backcountry cooking demonstration, the NOLS Intern Team gave out free pizza and cinnamon rolls at Friday’s trade fair. We were lucky enough to catch the handstand and crate-stacking contests from our booth. This year saw a lot of interest in Wilderness Medicine Institute courses and the new Wyss campus, and hungry climbers from as far away as California sampled our food and picked up NOLS stickers and catalogues. The festival enjoys wide-ranging support from the NOLS community, from the hard work of director Brian Fabel to the volunteer coordination of Mandy Pohja and Kelly Sloan.

NOLS RM Volunteer Day at Pushroot Community Garden

By Matt Leslie on Jul 3, 2012

Last Friday the NOLS Rocky Mountain and Three Peaks Ranch interns held a volunteer work day at the Pushroot Community Garden in Lander. Despite the Fontenelle fire draping Lander in heavy smoke the past few evenings, the sky cleared for a successful event! Community members, NOLS employees, and even a family who had just rolled into town from Philadelphia tackled some of Pushroot’s biggest tasks on their to-do list. Volunteers were able to completely deer-proof the lot’s perimeter fence, put together a composter, wood-chip the base of trees, as well as finish other general maintenance tasks. Pushroot, located on 715 Amoretti, is a community run garden which rents plots to locals and provides food for community organizations such as Lights On and the food bank. For a garden that is so community-oriented, it was nice to give back. For more information about Pushroot, please visit: www.pushrootcommunitygarden.com

Rocky Mountain Branch Hosts Annual BBQ

By Matt Leslie on Jun 26, 2012

This past Tuesday the National Outdoor Leadership School's Rocky Mountain Branch invited members of the NOLS community to the RM's annual barbeque in Lander City Park. The event was a success, with an estimated attendance of over 125 guests. Barbeque guests enjoyed the beautiful weather, great food, games, and the company of many members of the NOLS community and their friends and family. Those who deserve the praise for putting together such a wonderful evening include Glenda Brannan for organizing it all, Gnat Wells for providing the food, Gary Cukjati, Steve Matson, and Mark Nunnick for grilling up the chicken, burgers, and dogs, and many many others, who did everything from collect games to clean up. Without this organization and support the BBQ would not have been nearly as successful.
